Play Pasture Golf at historic Siasconset Golf Club
in Siasconset, Nantucket, Massachusetts. Designed by Alex Findlay
in 1894, we have come to see that this links style course is actually
unpasturized
and only masqueraded as a pasture golf gem.
Are there other such imposters here at pasturegolf.com? We
welcome submissions of real pasture golf courses to this pasture
golfers' directory. |
"There
are undeniable glories to Pasture Golf. The come-as-you-are dress
code is refreshing, and the greens fees, which range from free to
a fiver or a tenner, are as remarkable as they are reactionary. In
fact, the image and principles behind the Pasture Golf movement are
so attractive that, I notice on the Web site, some unpasturized clubs
are trying to make false claims. Siasconset Golf Club on tony Nantucket
Island in Massachusetts has been nominated for certification. Well,
I’ve played Siasconset, and it is linksy and windblown, yes, but it’s
also fancy-schmantzy. It’s got smooth-rolling greens and, in high
season, an exclusive clientele." - GOLF:
The game au naturel Some players like their golf as elemental as possible.

True Cow pasture golf. The course feels like no improvements
have been made since it was created in 1894. While not along the coast,
the soil is very sandy and the area beyond the rough is scrub brush.
The fairways are not watered and rarely green in July. The greens
are watered but rarely mowed and most are tiny and flat. Where you
do have a long putt, you may need a hip turn to get the ball to the
cup. To add flavor to the course, the Nantucket Golf Club, an extraordinarily
expensive golf club (we've heard membership fee of $200,000 and up)
for the nouveau riche built in 1995, wraps around this pasture golf
gem. |
